Conference Theme: “Engaging with Vietnam and ASEAN: Mobilities and Identities in an Age of Global Transformation”

For over a decade, the Engaging With Vietnam (EWV) conference series has worked to develop cutting-edge knowledge about Vietnam.

At our conferences in Melbourne, Hanoi, Honolulu, Thai Nguyen, Oregon, Bac Ninh, Ho Chi Minh City, An Giang, Phan Thiet and Leiden, EWV has crisscrossed the globe to bring together scholars who examine, from multidisciplinary perspectives, the tremendous changes taking place in Vietnam as it develops and integrates into the world.

At the same time that the EWV conferences have focused on Vietnam, they have also always welcomed contributions from scholars who focus on other countries and societies so as to benefit from comparative insights.

Given that Vietnam chaired ASEAN in 2020, we feel that this is an opportune moment to emphasize the comparative element that has always been an important component of EWV by expanding the focus for the 12th Engaging With Vietnam conference to cover the theme of:

“Engaging With Vietnam and ASEAN: Mobilities and Identities in an Age of Global Transformation.”

Many of the issues that Vietnam currently faces are shared by its fellow ASEAN partners, and are also ultimately global issues.

At the broadest level, the entire ASEAN region, like much of the rest of the world, is witnessing the ever-increasing mobility of people, goods, ideas, and now diseases at a time when the environment is being ever-more-intensely transformed by humans and climate change.

Meanwhile, in the midst of all of these dramatic transformations, people are seeking to find ways to ground themselves through their sense of identity and belonging.

In facing all of these transformations, Vietnam and ASEAN, like the rest of Asia, are striving to find the best ways to move into the future, a future that is increasingly global.

This is the issue that the theme of ICAS 12 – Crafting a Global Future – seeks to address.

We, therefore, feel that the themes of the two conferences complement each other very well, and we are very impressed by the contributions to EWV 12.

Please see below for an overview of the conference. More detailed information is available on the ICAS website.

Note: On some days, the final EWV panel starts at midnight Japan time.

In the full ICAS/EWV program, such panels are listed with the panels on the following day. However, for people in other places, that final panel will fall before midnight, and therefore, will take place on the same day as the ones immediately before it.

We have made special note below of the panels that fall at this time.

Finally, as for the style of this version of the program for the EWV website, we have created a “manga” theme to honor our host in Japan, Kyoto Seika University, but we have also added American retro/pop art elements to create a unique mashup of comic styles.

For each conference we create a program in a different style to highlight the fact that each Engaging With Vietnam conference is special.

This year’s conference is no exception, and we wish to thank the participants as well as ICAS and Kyoto Seika University for making this conference special yet again.
