Chúng tôi trân trọng thông báo Hội thảo Engaging With Vietnam lần thứ 14 sẽ diễn ra tại Huế vào thời gian 1-6 tháng 8 năm 2023, do Engaging With Vietnam (EWV) phối hợp tổ chức cùng Sở Văn Hóa Thể Thao thuộc Ủy Ban Nhân Dân tỉnh Thừa Thiên Huế, Khoa Quốc Tế Đại Học Huế cùng một số đơn vị trong nước và quốc tế.
Hội thảo Engaging With Vietnam là chuỗi hội thảo học thuật thường niên, mỗi năm hội thảo sẽ tập trung sâu vào một chủ đề bên cạnh các chủ đề khác phản ánh tính đa ngành và liên ngành của EWV. Hội thảo EWV lần thứ 14 tại Huế sẽ tập trung vào chủ đề di sản. Tiêu đề Hội thảo dự kiến “Living with Heritage, (Re)creating Heritage: Vietnam and the World” (Sống Cùng Di Sản, Tái Tạo/Tạo Di Sản: Việt Nam và Thế Giới).
Ngôn ngữ trình bày tại hội thảo: tiếng Việt và tiếng Anh. Các phiên toàn thể sẽ có dịch cabin.

The 13th Engaging With Vietnam (EWV) Conference will be held from 01-06 August 2023 in Huế, Vietnam
Jointly organized by Engaging With Vietnam, the Department of Culture and Sports under Thua Thien Hue People’s Committee, the International School – Hue University, and other local and international entities. We will announce these entities shortly.
The Engaging With Vietnam conference series has always focused on the issue of knowledge production. We are interested in understanding the various types of knowledge that are produced on all topics related to Vietnam, and in exploring the factors that influence the formation of specific types of knowledge.
For the 14th Engaging with Vietnam conference, we will continue this approach by examining the complex and diverse topic of heritage.
Heritage is an essential part of our identity, history, and culture. It shapes our communities, influences our daily lives, and inspires our future. However, heritage is not static. It evolves, adapts, and responds to the changing social, economic, and political contexts. To explore the dynamic nature of heritage and its role in shaping people’s relationship with the past, the 14th Engaging with Vietnam conference will take as its theme “Living with Heritage, (Re)Creating Heritage: Vietnam and the World.”
Living with Heritage, (Re)Creating Heritage: Vietnam and the World
Here we should note that we wish to understand “heritage” in its broadest possible sense. We see heritage as not only a set of tangible and intangible cultural, natural, and historical resources that have been inherited from the past, but new phenomena, from artistic works to 3D models, that can be created in the present and that are meant to serve as a form of heritage as well.
In addition, the sub-title, “Vietnam and the World,” is meant to be understood in varied ways. For example, first, understandings of heritage in Vietnam cannot be understood without reference to global institutions and discourses that address heritage in all of its forms. In other words, it is often impossible to talk about heritage in Vietnam without reference to issues in the larger world of heritage creation, preservation, promotion, and management at the global level.
Second, Engaging with Vietnam always welcomes scholarship on places other than Vietnam as we strongly believe that knowledge of one’s own topic of study is always enriched and strengthened by knowledge of work on similar topics from other parts of the world. We, therefore, welcome submissions by scholars working on other parts of the world whose topics address the conference theme.
Here are some general topics that we hope scholars will address:
1. Living with Heritage: Explore the ways in which communities and individuals interact with heritage in their daily lives. Examine the challenges and opportunities of preserving and adapting heritage across time, space, community, context, and knowledge system.
2. (Re)Creating Heritage: Investigate the processes of heritage (re)creation, interpretation, and representation. Explore the role of heritage in constructing and negotiating identity, memory, and meaning.
3. Heritage, Identity, and Belonging: Examine the relationship between heritage and identity in the contemporary world. Explore the ways in which heritage shapes our sense of belonging and our relationships with others.
Finally, while we will particularly welcome proposals that address the conference theme, as the only annual multi-disciplinary conference on Vietnam in the world, we also welcome proposals on all topics in the Social Sciences, Humanities, and the Arts, Education, and Interdisciplinary Studies relating to Vietnam.

Types of Proposals
Deadline for Proposal Submissions: 10 May 2023
Notification of Acceptance: 20 May 2023
We welcome various types of proposals, from individual presentations to organized panels, or roundtable discussions and art exhibitions and film screenings.
Note: participants at EWV 14 may only present one (1) paper, however, they may participate in another capacity in other forums, such as serving as a chair or discussant for an organized panel, or participating in a roundtable discussion, etc.

Individual Presentations
- Proposal submissions are in English or Vietnamese and no more than 300 words. Proposals for individual presentations can be single-authored or multi-authored.
- Applicants are only allowed to submit one paper proposal. It is not permitted to submit two or more abstracts.
- If accepted, only those who register can have their names listed in the program. This applies to all presentations, single-authored or multi-authored.
- The EWV 14 Selection Committee will compile panels of 4 individual paper presenters. The time slot for a panel composed of individual papers is 120 minutes.
- The organisers will assign a chair for each panel.
- All individual proposals are to be submitted online using the link below.
Panels
- The conference also accepts proposal submissions for a panel session that discusses a related or common theme. This type of session provides panellists with the opportunity to plan ahead how to run the session and to coordinate presentations and discussion in a fruitful manner. It is encouraged that the panellists leave ample time for overall discussion and Q&A. Interacting with the audience is highly encouraged.
- Proposals for a panel session are within 500 words, specifying the overall focus, key points and arguments, insights and methodological issues, and how each individual presentation is linked to the whole session. Together with this up to 500-word overall proposal, a up to 300-word proposal for each individual presentation is also required.
- Panellists of each panel session usually propose a chair and a discussant at the time of submission. The chair is often the moderator as well. However, if the panellists need the conference to look for a suitable chair or discussant in case their chair or discussant cannot attend the conference, this could be arranged although not guaranteed.
- A panel should be within a 120-minute time frame, and is consisting of no less than 4 related individual presentations. These individual presentations can be single-authored or multi-authored.
- All proposals are to be submitted online using the link below.
In-depth Roundtable Discussion Sessions
- In-depth Roundtable Discussion is a form of academic discussion, which is often interactive, lively and in focus, and is led by a chair. Participants agree on a specific topic to discuss and debate. Each person is given equal right and time to participate, and as such no one should dominate the discussion. This format is facilitated and illustrated by the idea of a circular layout referred to in the term round table.
- Proposals for this type of sessions are within 500 words, specifying the overall topic/issue, key points and what to be discussed and debated, and how each member contributes and what each brings to the whole discussion.
- The maximum time for a Roundtable Discussion is 120 minutes, and the maximum number of members is 10 for each session. You may request multiple sessions if the number of participants is more than 10 and if the topic under discussion requires extensive engagement. We encourage general conference participants to attend this type of sessions, and therefore Roundtable Discussion members are asked to engage with the audience as much as possible during the session.

Art Exhibitions/Installations/Workshops
- Proposals for art exhibitions/installations/workshops can be emailed directly to the conference address engagingwithvietnam[at]gmail.com.
- We need a detailed description of the proposed event, who will participate, if artist’s talk is included, and what is required in terms of space, space setting, equipment, sound and lighting.
Movie/Documentary Screening
- Proposals for movie/documentary screening can be emailed directly to the conference address engagingwithvietnam[at]gmail.com.
- We need a detailed description of the proposed event, including a summary of the movie/documentary, its length, who among the film/documentary making team will participate, any post-screening discussion is included, and what is required in terms of space, space setting, equipment, sound and lighting.

Dr. Phan Le Ha, Founder of Engaging With Vietnam (engagingwithvietnam.org), is Senior Professor at Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education and Head of the International and Comparative Education Research Group (ICE) at Universiti Brunei Darussalam. She also holds an Honorary Professorship in the IOE – Culture, Communication & Media, University College London, UK. Prior to Brunei, Phan Le Ha was tenured Full Professor in the Department of Educational Foundations, College of Education, University of Hawaii at Manoa and Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Education, Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. She has been serving as editor, associate editor and editorial board members for book series and journals published by internationally renowned publishers such as Multilingual Matters (UK), Routledge, Wiley, SAGE, and Cambridge University Press. Phan Le Ha has taught and published extensively on English language education, identity-language-culture-pedagogy, global/international/transnational higher education, international and development education, academic mobilities, and sociology of knowledge. Her research work has covered many contexts in Southeast Asia, East Asia, the Asia-Pacific and the Gulf regions.
Together with Liam C. Kelley, Phan Le Ha founded the Global Vietnam book series with Springer Nature, and the Global Vietnam journal with Amsterdam University Press. Phan Le Ha and Liam C. Kelley are the Founding Editors and Editors-in-Chief of the Global Vietnam book series and journal. Phan Le Ha has also published poems, short novels and stories in English and Vietnamese. She has collaborated with artists and musicians to write songs and create albums, which include “Người Nghệ Sỹ Đường Phố” (Street Musicians) with Bao Dat, “Nhìn Lại” (Looking Back) with Ngo Hong Quang, and “Poetry Jazz The Muse” (Nàng Thơ) with Nguyen Bao Long and Pham Ha Linh. She also wrote the lyrics for eight songs in the upcoming album entitled “Những Con Sông Ngón Tay,” a collaboration with Tran Duc Minh and Tran Thu Ha (Ha Tran).
Tiến sỹ Phan Thanh Hải, sinh năm 1969.
Giám đốc Sở Văn hóa và Thể thao tỉnh Thừa Thiên Huế (từ năm 2019 đến nay), nguyên Giám đốc Trung tâm bảo tồn di tích Cố đô Huế (2012-2019).
Sau khi tốt nghiệp khoa Lịch sử- Trường đại học Tổng hợp Huế, từ năm 1992 bắt đầu làm việc tại Trung tâm BTDTCĐ Huế (Hue Monuments Conservation Centre) tại phòng Nghiên cứu Khoa học thuộc Trung tâm. Năm 2001 tốt nghiệp Thạc sỹ tại khoa Lịch sử, trường đại học Khao học Huế, năm 2008, bảo vệ thành công Luận án Tiến sỹ tại Viện Sử học, thuộc Viện Hàn lâm KHXH Việt Nam.
Sở trường nghiên cứu: Lịch sử văn hóa Huế, giao lưu văn hóa Đông Á.
Hiện là Ủy viên Hội đồng Di sản Văn hóa quốc gia, Phó chủ tịch Hội Khảo cổ học Việt Nam, Ủy viên Ban thường vụ Hội Di sản Văn hóa Việt Nam, Phó chủ tịch Hội KHLS Thừa Thiên Huế.
Từng tham gia nhiều diễn đàn khoa học trong nước và quốc tế, có hơn 30 bài báo, luận văn khoa học đã được đăng tải trên các tạp chí khoa học chuyên ngành trong nước và quốc tế.
Dr. Liam C. Kelley is Associate Professor of Southeast Asian Studies in the Institute of Asian Studies (IAS) at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD). Primarily a historian of premodern Vietnam, he has published on a variety of topics, from the culture of premodern Sino-Vietnamese diplomatic relations, to the medieval construction of Vietnamese antiquity, to the impact of globalization and the digital revolution on area studies, to the history of the Southeast Asian polity of “Srivijaya.”
Together with Phan Le Ha, Liam Kelley co-organizes the Engaging with Vietnam conference series, and co-founded the Global Vietnam book series with Springer Nature, and the Global Vietnam journal with Amsterdam University Press.
Last but not least, Liam Kelley is also the Engaging With Vietnam conference photographer. So, when you attend the conference, remember to always smile, because you never know when he might take a picture. . . 🙂

Dr. Lan Anh Hoang is Associate Professor in Development Studies and Deputy Head of School in the School of Social and Political Sciences, the University of Melbourne. She is author of Vietnamese Migrants in Russia: Mobility in Times of Uncertainty (Amsterdam University Press 2020) which won the Association of Mainland Southeast Asia Scholars Book Prize in 2022. Her edited books Transnational Labour Migration, Remittances, and the Changing Family in Asia (2015) and Money and Moralities in Contemporary Asia (2019) provide comprehensive analyses of how social values, practices, and the fabric of society across Asia have been transformed by migration and mobilities.
Lan Anh’s research on migration and gender has also been published in many prestigious journals such as Gender and Society; Gender, Place and Culture; Global Networks; Population, Space and Place; Geoforum; Ethnic and Racial Studies; Mobilities; Asian Studies Review; and the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies. Her current project examines brokerage and social networks in the Vietnam-Australia migration corridor.
Lan Anh is Regional Editor (Mainland Southeast Asia) of the Asian Studies Review, Thematic Editor (Migration) of Development in Practice, and an Associate Editor of Springer’s “Global Vietnam” book series. Lan Anh co-edited the Palgrave Macmillan book series “Anthropology, Change, and Development” from 2013 to 2021 and is currently sitting on the International Advisory Board of Feminist Theory.
PGS.TS Phạm Quỳnh Phương là chuyên gia ngành Nhân học văn hoá, với trên 25 năm kinh nghiệm nghiên cứu các vấn đề liên quan đến sự biến đổi của đời sống văn hóa xã hội đương đại ở Việt Nam. Sau khi nhận bằng tiến sĩ tại Đại học La Trobe (Australia), cô tiếp tục nghiên cứu sau tiến sĩ tại Đại học Quốc gia Singapore (NUS) và có thời gian tham gia giảng dạy tại đây.
Mối quan tâm của cô tập trung vào sự biến đổi và tính chính trị của văn hoá trong xã hội đương đại (bao gồm các chủ đề về văn hoá thường ngày, di sản phi vật thể, tôn giáo dân gian, văn hoá tộc người, giới, đa dạng tính dục và phong trào xã hội). Đồng thời, cô cũng tham gia nhiều hoạt động nghiên cứu phát triển cho các tổ chức NGOs và giảng dạy tại một số cơ sở đào tạo sau đại học, với mong muốn truyền cảm hứng, góp phần khai mở những cách nhìn mới về hiện thực đời sống.
Cô là tác giả của hàng chục các bài viết được in trên các tạp chí trong nước và quốc tế, và một số đầu sách như Hero and Deity: Tran Hung Dao and the Resurgence of Popular Religion in Vietnam (Silkworm Books), Giới tăng cường và phát triển – quan hệ giới từ góc nhìn của người dân tộc thiểu số ở Việt Nam (Nxb Thế giới), Biến đổi xã hội ở Việt Nam đương đại – Một nghiên cứu về phong trào của người đồng tính, song tính và chuyển giới (Nxb Khoa học xã hội).
PGS.TS Phạm Quỳnh Phương đã có nhiều năm làm việc tại Viện Hàn lâm khoa học xã hội Việt Nam, và hiện nay là Phó Giáo sư và Trưởng Bộ môn Công nghiệp Văn hóa và Sáng tạo tại Khoa các Khoa học liên ngành, Đại học Quốc gia Hà Nội, với những quan tâm nghiên cứu mới về di sản và công nghiệp văn hóa.
Associate Professor Dr. Pham Quynh Phuong obtained her PhD in Anthropology at La Trobe University in Australia and conducted post-doctoral research at the National University of Singapore (NUS). With over 25 years of experience in the field, Dr. Phuong has dedicated her career to the study of cultural and social changes in contemporary society, with a particular focus on issues related to ethnic minorities, intangible heritage, popular religion, gender and sexuality and social movements.
Her interest focuses on the transformation and politics of culture in contemporary society (including topics of everyday culture, intangible heritage, folk religion, ethnic culture, gender, sexual diversity and social movements). At the same time, she also participates in many research and development activities for NGOs and teaches at a number of graduate training institutions, with the desire to inspire and contribute to opening new perspectives on real life in the present.
She is the author of many articles published in national and international journals, and a number of books such as Hero and Deity: Tran Hung Dao and the Resurgence of Popular Religion in Vietnam (Silkworm Books), Gender, Empowerment and Development: Gender Relations from the Perspective of Ethnic Minorities in Vietnam (The Giới Publisher), Social Change in Contemporary Vietnam – A Study of the Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Movements (Social Science Publishing House).
Dr. Phuong currently servers as an Associate Professor and the Head of Cultural and Creative Industries at the School of Interdisciplinary Studies, National University of Hanoi. Her research interests have recently shifted to the exploration of cultural heritage and the cultural and creative industries.
Dr. V. Dao Truong is an assistant professor of tourism in Geography, Environment and Development, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), and an affiliated researcher in Tourism Research in Economic Environs & Society (TREES), North-West University (UNW), South Africa. An Emerald Literati Awards holder (2019), Dao serves as regional editor for Journal of Social Marketing (1/2023–present) and editorial board member for Social Marketing Quarterly (2017–present), International Review on Nonprofit and Public Marketing (2019–present), and Current Issues in Asian Tourism (2016–2020).

Dr. Lê Nam Trung Hiếu is a teacher by profession, a history researcher at heart, and a Hue lover. He has been working as a tenured lecturer at the International School of Hue University and as a visiting lecturer at various other universities. Before receiving his PhD degree in International History in 2017 from Hue University, he spent years in Europe studying political science in Ghent University and historiography in Porto University on Erasmus Mundus scholarships. His publications mostly focus on historical and societal issues of the Vietnam War and the international relations of Vietnam. He is also the assistant to the Euraxess representative in Vietnam, acting as the Euraxess liaison to Vietnam ad interim whose main duty is to enhance the educational and technological exchange between the EU and Vietnam.
Dr. Tran Van Dung has been working as an official at the Cultural Heritage Management Division, the Department of Culture and Sports of Thua Thien Hue province and a visiting lecturer at various universities in Hue city. He received his PhD degree in Ethnology in 2020 from Hue University. Now he is also vice president of the Association of Thua Thien Hue Folklorists. His publications mostly focus on Hue cultural heritage.
TS. Trần Văn Dũng hiện đang công tác tại phòng Quản lý Di sản văn hóa, Sở Văn hóa và Thể thao tỉnh Thừa Thiên Huế. Ngoài ra, anh ấy còn là giảng viên thỉnh giảng tại một số Trường Đại học ở thành phố Huế. Anh ấy nhận bằng Tiến sĩ Dân tộc học vào năm 2020 tại Đại học Huế. Hiện nay, anh ấy đang đảm nhiệm chức vụ Phó Chủ tịch Hội Văn nghệ Dân gian tỉnh Thừa Thiên Huế. Các bài nghiên của của anh ấy chủ yếu tập trung về chủ đề di sản văn hóa Huế.
Dr. Tuyen Dai Quang, known as Isvan, is a member of the Cham community in Vietnam. With a decade of experience at the Cham Cultural Research Center in Ninh Thuan and ten years as a university lecturer, Isvan has made significant contributions to the study of his culture. He currently serves as a member of the Faculty of Vietnamese and Tourism Studies at Nguyen Tat Thanh University in Vietnam. Isvan’s research interests are diverse, including indigenous knowledge, Champa culture (such as Raglai, Cham H’roi, Churu), living heritage, heritage conservation, and tourism development. He is also a co-founder of the Vietnam Tourism Research Network, which focuses on improving the publication capacity of Vietnamese people in the field of cultural heritage and tourism.
Dr. Dang Thi Phuong-Anh is currently a lecturer at the Faculty of Tourism Studies, University of Social Science and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-Hanoi). Phuong-Anh earned her Ph.D. in Cultural Management at the Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Art Studies (2017). She completed her BA and MA at the Faculty of Tourism Studies, VNU-Hanoi (2005 & 2012). Her enduring research focus is tourism and heritage studies, including the conservation & promotion of heritage, the sustainability of tourism development, and especially the issues of minority communities and gender in development plans. More broadly, she has developed her academic interest in applying inter-disciplinary perspectives in social and cultural studies.

2011 – 2013: Hoàn thành các khóa đào tạo nghiệp vụ bảo tồn về: gạch, đá, gốm, sắt và phương pháp lập hồ sơ khoa học cho dự án, do Viện bảo tồn di sản Ba Lan (PKZ) phối hợp đào tạo.

Kiến trúc sư Trần Quang Trung với hơn 15 năm kinh nghiệm thiết kế trong nhiều lĩnh vực như phát triển đô thị mới, khu du lịch, các công trình giao thông, văn phòng, thương mại, công cộng, khu dân cư, vui chơi giải trí, các tòa nhà giáo dục trong quá trình công tác tại nhiều công ty Tư vấn Thiết kế quốc tế như ARCHETYPE (Pháp), ARCHIPEL (Pháp), HYDER Consulting (Anh) …. Những thiết kế luôn luôn nhận được sự hài lòng từ khách hàng và chính quyền địa phương và các cấp quản lý.
Kiến trúc sư Trần Quang Trung đã chủ trì nhiều dự án bao gồm Khu Tổ hợp Vinhomes Nguyễn Chí Thanh, Tòa nhà văn phòng DETECH, Tòa nhà văn phòng ELCOM, Tổ hợp khách sạn, Tòa nhà VP BANK 89 Láng Hạ, Tổ hợp Golden Land 275 Nguyễn Trãi, Khách sạn PULLMAN Vũng Tàu ….. và nhiều dự án đã và sẽ được hoàn thành trong tương lai gần.
Dr. Trần Thị An is an Associate Professor in the School of Interdisciplinary Studies, Vietnam National University in Hanoi. She gained her PhD in Folklore Studies. An Trần previously worked for the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) for 29 years, and served as the Head of the Folklore Division in the Institute of Literature (an institute under VASS), and the Director of the Scientific Management Department of VASS.
An Trần researches about Vietnamese culture, foklkore, and Vietnamese public policy. Her ongoing focus is on interdisciplinary research. At the same time, together with her research team at the School of Interdisciplinary Studies, VNU she is designing programs in Heritage Studies, paying special attention to Vietnamese tangible and intangible cultural heritage in contemporary contexts. Currently, she is lecturing at the School of Interdisciplanary Studies, VNU, and is also serving as the Chairman of the Hanoi Folklore Association.
An Trần is an expert in folklore and culture studies. She has carried out numerous research projects on Vietnamese culture published in articles and books in Vietnamese, as well as presented in many international conferences in Asian Studies. Her signature book is Charactistics of Folk Legends and Documentation of Vietnamese Folk Legends (Vietnam Social Science Publishing House, 2014), which was awarded the second prize by the Vietnam Association of Folk Arts and another prize by the Vietnam Publishers Association in 2015. She is the Editor-in-chief of the Collections on Vietnamese Legends, Folk Songs of Vietnam’s Ethnic Minorities, a contributing author for the book Vietnam at the Vanguard: New Perspectives Across Time, Space, and Community (Springer, 2021), and author of the recent article, “Myths and Legends in Creating Discourse on Heritage: A Case Study of Po Ina Nagar Tower (Nha Trang, Khánh Hoà),” Journal of Science, Thang Long University (2021).

“I started my journey as a Vietnamologist in 1997 when I first carried out fieldwork in Dong Thap province to study how farmers were adapting to the market economy under the Doi Moi reforms. From there onward, my engagement with Vietnam has brought me to the uplands, beginning with the Central Highlands where I studied state and frontier formations during the coffee fever of the late 1990s and under the First Republic regime in the 1950s-60s. I eventually ended up in the Tay Bac uplands as I began a long undertaking to learn about the complex historical-geography of the Dian-Viet Railway corridor, which extended my engagement across the border in Yunnan, China.
As fate would have it, I wound up spending my precious free evenings whenever I stopped over in Hanoi at Minh Jazz Club, which eventually led to a lifelong friendship with Quyen Van Minh and the jazz musicians in the capital. This friendship has so yielded two collaborative monographs, Playing Jazz in Socialist Vietnam: Quyen Van Minh and Jazz in Hanoi (2021) and Jazz in Socialist Hanoi: Improvisations between Worlds (2022).
In between my work in Vietnam, I also began a life-long engagement with the Kachin people, having designed a public anthropology project inspired by decolonising methodologies and digital ethnography that was active for almost a decade called Kachin Life Stories. Drawing from this project, and with the hope of encouraging similar endeavours among our Vietnamese colleagues, in collaboration with my old friends Nguyen Van Chinh, Nguyen Truong Giang (both of VNU-USSH Hanoi), we organised an international conference on the possibilities of digital anthropology in 2018, in Hanoi. I hope to see more of such innovative research endeavours emerging from this EWV edition focusing on the theme of heritage.”
Stan is currently an independent scholar. He has taught at the National University of Singapore, Ritsumeikan University, and RMIT University Vietnam.

Duong Van Bien is a Ph.D. candidate at the Institute of Asian Studies (IAS), Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) in Brunei Darussalam, and a researcher at the Institute for Religious Studies (IRS), Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) in Vietnam. His research interest focuses on a wide range of topics: the transformation of religion in Vietnam and Southeast Asia; religion and practical needs (education, social security, environmental protection, policy, etc.); religion and Identity, nationalism, and globalization; and the philosophy of religion. For his Ph.D. dissertation, Bien is researching about the localization of Catholicism in Vietnam.
