TOURING VIETNAM: Exploring “Development”, “Tourism” and “Sustainability” from Multi-disciplinary and Multi-directional Perspectives

The 9th Engaging with Vietnam conference with three joined parts brought about a completely new experience to our conference series. With the theme of exploring “development,” “tourism,” and “sustainability” in/of Vietnam from multi-disciplinary and multi-directional perspectives, the 9th EWV conference introduced various activities, ranging from keynote sessions and academic presentations to exhibitions, idea contests, a policy forum, Q&A sessions, curriculum development discussions, sightseeing, field observations, and music performances that were all integrated to offer participants opportunities to feel, think, engage, try out and live the conference theme.

Other distinctive features of EWV9 were its length and location. Its length was innovative, as the complete experience took place over a period of almost 10 days, from December 28, 2017 to January 4, 2018. Its location was also innovative, as the conference was held at three places and participants “toured” from the South (Ho Chi Minh City) to Bình Dương (Southeast of HCMC) to the West of HCMC (An Giang, Mekong Delta), a connection that was made by means of an enjoyable coach tour across these locations. Participants celebrated together New Year’s Eve and welcomed 2018 in Ho Chi Minh City before heading to Bình Dương on the very first day of 2018, where their explorations of and engagement with Vietnam’s “development,” “tourism” and “sustainability” will continued.

As usual, our keynote sessions and featured panels with speakers from several disciplines laid out larger (re)conceptualisations, interdisciplinary bodies of scholarship, contradicting arguments, methodologies, and questions that invited everyone to (re)think about “development,” “tourism,” and “sustainability.”

Keynote and Invited Speakers

Phan Lê Hà

Phan Lê Hà (Phan is the family name), PhD, is a Full Professor in the College of Education, University of Hawai’i at Manoa, USA. Professor Phan also holds adjunct positions at universities in Vietnam and Australia. Her expertise includes language-identity-pedagogy studies, knowledge mobility and production, TESOL, and international and higher education. She is the founder of Engaging with Vietnam, which since 2009 has brought together policy makers, researchers, and professionals working in a wide range of countries and organizations to engage with Vietnam-related scholarship from inter- and multi-disciplinary perspectives and approaches. She looks forward to your helping the Initiative to blossom and sustain itself as a continuing rigorous dialogue.

Phan Le Ha’s expertise, knowledge and experiences are largely informed by her work in Asia, Australia, the Middle East, and North America. She has been supervising/advising research projects at Honours, Master’s and PhD levels on a wide range of topics, including identity studies, English language education in global contexts, transnational/offshore education, and the internationalisation of education more broadly.

Professor Phan is currently developing a new interest in engaging with the arts, the media and the digital world to produce multimodal multidisciplinary scholarship and to push research and knowledge production into new directions.

Liam C. Kelley

Dr. Liam Kelley is an Associate Professor in the History Department at the Univeristy of Hawaii at Manoa. His research and teaching focuses on mainland Southeast Asian history, and premodern Vietnamese history. He has published a book on envoy poetry (thơ đi sứ), co-edited a book on China’s Southern frontiers, and published articles and book chapters on the invention of traditions in medieval Vietnam, the emergence of Vietnamese nationalism and spirit writing (giáng bút) in early twentieth century Vietnam. He has also completed English translations of the outer annals (ngoại kỷ) of the Đại Việt sử ký toàn thư and the Khâm định Việt sử thông giám cương mực. Dr. Kelley is currently writing a monograph on the modern search for Viet origins and developing his arts-inspired interests on knowledge production which can be found on his personal blog (leminhkhai.wordpress.com) and its associated YouTube channel.

Dr. Liam Kelley, since 2011, has been co-developing the Engaging with Vietnam initiative with Dr. Phan Lê Hà.

Võ Văn Sen

Dr. Võ Văn Sen, President of University of Social Sciences and Humanities (USSH), Vietnam National University of Ho Chi Minh City, is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of History. He is also a member of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Council, Council of Sustainable Development of HCM City, and Council of Universities in HCM City, and a standing member of the Executive Committee of the Association of Vietnamese Historians.

In 1992, Võ Văn Sen held a visiting fellowship at Harvard University (USA) and had the opportunity to learn more about historiography and up-to-date teaching methods. In 1998, he worked as a visiting lecturer at Faculty of Foreign Languages and Asian Studies, Nagoya University of Commerce & Business Administration (Japan). His primary research is about Vietnamese history, political science and contemporary social issues. His best known works include “The Issues of Land Tenure in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam”, “The Development of Capitalism in South Vietnam (1954-1975)”, “History of Vietnam (1945-1975)” (joint authored), and “Thoai Son on the Way of Sustainable Development” (joint authored), among others.

As the President of a flagship university, Dr. Võ Văn Sen has been leading with a strategic vision. Under his leadership, USSH has built a responsive, flexible and autonomous system of governance and management. President Võ Văn Sen has been continuously working to enhance the system to promote high quality teaching, learning and research.

Ngô Thị Phương Lan

Dr. Ngô Thị Phương Lan is an anthropologist and vice president [at the time of the 9th conference – she became president in 2018] of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (USSH), Vietnam National University – HoChiMinh City. Her research focuses on environmental anthropology, economic anthropology, cultural ecology and livelihood.

Among her many works, From Rice to Shrimp: The Behavior of Reducing Risks and Exploiting Social Capital of in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam is an important scientific work in economic anthropology and economic development of Vietnam. The research, which is based on long-term field-work data and harmonious combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis, not only clarifies the strategy to distribute and minimize risks of farmers in the Mekong Delta, but also determines the role of social networks or social capital in this strategy. She is currently working on new interesting research on the development of tourism in An Giang province.

Dr. Ngô Thị Phương Lan’s expertise and knowledge contribute very much to her leadership. In being responsible for scientific management, she has established and maintained partnerships between USSH and universities in ASEAN, and has cooperated with foreign partners to carry out research activities. Moreover, she has been running The Center for Rural Development, which has the function of organizing research programs and applicable projects in rural development.

Michael S. Bruno

Dr. Michael S. Bruno is the Vice Chancellor for Research and interim Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Prior to his appointment, he was the Dean of the School of Engineering and Science, and Professor of Ocean Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, New Jersey. He was also the Director of the Center for Maritime Security, a Department of Homeland Security National Center of Excellence. Dr. Bruno is a Visiting Professor in Mechanical Engineering at University College London. His research and teaching interests include ocean observation systems, maritime security, and community resilience. He is the author of more than 100 technical publications in various aspects of these fields. He has served on numerous advisory committees and boards, including Chairing the Marine Board of the National Academies; the Ocean Research Advisory Panel; the Naval Research Advisory Committee, and the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) Coastal Zone Community of Practice. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Marine Environmental Engineering. A Fulbright Scholar (1996 appointment at the Aristotle University, Greece), Dr. Bruno is also a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He received the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award in 1991, and the Outstanding Service Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1988. Dr. Bruno holds a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, a M.S. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley, and a PhD degree in Civil and Ocean Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Joint Program in Oceanography/Applied Ocean Science & Engineering.

Nguyễn Văn Hiệp

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyễn Văn Hiệp was the first headmaster and also proposed and presided over the project of establishing Thủ Dầu Một University. He was the Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Bình Dương Province from 2001 to 2010. It was during this time that he nurtured the idea of establishing a university in Bình Dương.

In 2009, Thủ Dầu Một University was established, he was assigned the position of Rector. Since then, he has devoted himself to building Thủ Dầu Một University into a multi-disciplinary, multi-sector, high- quality university in Bình Dương province in the Southeast Key Economic Region. Under his leadership, Thủ Dầu Một University has developed very rapidly in terms of training scale, faculty members, facilities, science and technology. The school has built close relationships with many scientific and educational institutions in the country and established a reputation in society.

He holds great responsibility in managing and operating Thủ Dầu Một University but Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Van Hiep devotes adequate time to scientific research. With expertise in the history of science, he is interested in researching the topics for the socio-economic development of Bình Dương province and developing Thủ Dầu Một University. Some of his publications have been published, such as Economic and Social Transformation in Bình Dương Province 1945-2005 (National Political Publishing House 2010), Social Welfare – Status and Access of Workers in Bình Dương Industrial Parks (National Political Publishing House 2015), Material and History of Vietnam (2016). Currently, he is implementing the project on livelihoods and poverty reduction in Bình Dương. He is also very interested in researching and is chairing a scientific research program on the Southeast Key Economic Region.

Nguyễn Thanh Bình

TS Nguyễn Thanh Bình, là ủy viên Ban Thƣờng vụ Tỉnh ủy, Phó Chủ tịch Ủy ban nhân dân tỉnh An Giang. Ông lấy bằng tiến sĩ, chuyên ngành Lý luận và phƣơng pháp dạy học Văn – Tiếng Việt. TS. Nguyễn Thanh Bình trực tiếp chỉ đạo, điều hành các lĩnh vực: Giáo dục và đào tạo; Y tế, chăm sóc sức khỏe nhân dân; Tôn giáo, dân tộc; Bƣu chính, thông tin và truyền thông; Báo chí; Lao động, thƣơng binh và xã hội; An sinh xã hội; Văn hóa, Thể thao; Phát triển du lịch; Quản lý trực tiếp và xử lý các dự án đầu tƣ xây

dựng thuộc lĩnh vực phụ trách. Ngoài ra ông giúp Chủ tịch Ủy ban nhân dân tỉnh công tác dân vận chính quyền; quy chế dân chủ cơ sở; công tác thi đua khen thƣởng; quan hệ Mặt trận Tổ quốc tỉnh, Liên đoàn Lao động tỉnh.

Hoàng Trọng Quyền

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoàng Trọng Quyền, Vice President of Thủ Dầu Một University, is Associate Professor of Literature. Born in 1963 in Ha Tinh province, he received his PhD in 2005 and obtained the title of associate professor in 2015.

He has been working at Thủ Dầu Một University s since the early years of establishment and has been holding key positions as Head of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Head of the Training Department and Vice President since 2012.

His major research interests are Vietnamese Literature, Comparative Literature. Major scientific publications published in recent years include the following:

Monographs: Nguyen Du and Do Phu – Similarities and Differences of Artistic Thought (2012);

Textbook: Poetry (2015);

Many scientific articles published in the Journal of Literary Studies of the Institute of Literature, the Journal of Social Science and journals of the University of Pedagogy in Ho Chi Minh City, Saigon University, and Vinh University.

During his working experience at Thủ Dầu Một University, Assoc. Prof. Hoàng Trọng Quyền has made many positive and effective contributions to the development of training and scientific research of the University. He was awarded the certificate of merit by People’s Committee of Binh Duong province.

Jamie Gillen

Dr. Jamie Gillen has been an assistant professor of geography at the National University of Singapore since 2011. His primary research and teaching is focused on tourism in Southeast Asia, with a focus on Vietnam. Jamie published a short book in 2016 that summarizes his research on the intersection of entrepreneurialism and tourism in Vietnam. Vietnam is also the centerpiece of other recent publications on topics like the urban-rural binary, the various uses and symbolisms of the motorbike, and the tools used to undertake fieldwork. His current projects include collaborative studies on Asian smallholders and Asian futurities.

Lê Thùy Linh

Dr. Lê Thùy Linh (PhD, Education, Monash University, Australia) has been a lecturer at Hanoi National University of Education (HNUE), Vietnam since 1999. She is currently the head of the English department at Baxter Institute and teaching TESOL at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. She has been actively involved in English language training and teacher education through her work with various professional development projects in Vietnam and Australia over the last 18 years. Her research interests include Teacher Education and Teacher Identity, Pedagogy and Assessment in TESOL, Professionalism in ELT, and recently Vocational Training and Education (VET).

Trần Anh Tiến

Tiến sĩ Trần Anh Tiến tốt nghiệp cử nhân ngành Xã hội học tại ĐH KHXH&NV – ĐHQG TP.HCM năm 2000, tốt nghiệp Thạc sĩ và Tiến sĩ Xã hội học tại ĐH Bang Iowa, Hoa Kì vào năm 2007 và 2015. TS Trần Anh Tiến hiện là Trưởng phòng Quản lí Khoa học – Dự án, trường ĐH KHXH&NV – ĐHQG TP. HCM. Ông cũng tham gia giảng dạy các môn

chuyên ngành xã hội học cho sinh viên đại học và sau đại học tại Khoa Xã hội học của Trường. Ông quan tâm nhiều đến các nghiên cứu về những biến đổi và phát triển xã hội, kinh tế, di dân và tái định cư, môi trường và đô thị. Ông đã từng tham gia, thiết kế và làm điều phối cho rất nhiều các đề tài và dự án nghiên cứu xã hội, điển hình như “Nâng cao năng lực giảm nghèo tại các địa phương Việt Nam,” “Vấn đề giảm nghèo trong quá trình đô thị hóa tại TP. HCM,” “Tìm hiểu thực tiễn vấn đề phụ nữ lấy chồng Đài Loan tại khu vực Đồng Bằng Sông Cửu Long.”Hiện ông còn là thành viên Ban biên tập Tạp chí AsTEN (The Association of Southeast Asian Teacher Education Network).

Iftekhar Iqbal

Dr. Iftekhar Iqbal is Associate Professor and Programme Leader of History and International Studies at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam with research interest in modern Asian studies and environmental history. Educated at the Universities of Dhaka and Cambridge, Dr. Iqbal has held fellowships with British Academy, Aga Khan University and Humboldt Foundation, while holding teaching and research appointments at the University of Dhaka, King’s College London and Humboldt University Berlin. Dr. Iqbal has published extensively including in Modern Asian Studies, Journal of Asian Studies, Environment and History and Indian Economic and Social History Review. Iqbal’s book, The Bengal Delta: Ecology, State and Social Change 1840-1943 (Palgrave 2010), examines the place of riverine ecology in the evolution of colonial Bangladesh and has received peer recognition including the Honorable Mention by the inaugural Bernard Cohn Book Prize Committee of the AAS. Iqbal is in the International Advisory Board of Conservation and Society and South Asia: Journal of South Asian Studies. His current research projects include transregional history of rivers across South Asia, mainland Southeast Asia and southwestern China, which brings him to the exciting conference on Engaging with Vietnam and to the bank of Mekong itself.

Nguyễn Tô Lan

Dr. Nguyễn Tô Lan has worked as a researcher at the Institute of Sino-Nom Studies, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences since 2004 and as a senior researcher since 2016. She graduated with a Bachelor of Linguistics and Literature in 2003 and then a Master’s in the same major in 2006 from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University (Hanoi), and a Bachelor of Chinese Linguistics from the University of Languages and International Studies, VNU in 2007. She received her Ph.D. in Linguistics and Literature from the Graduate Academy of Social Sciences in 2012.

From September 2010 to June 2011, she received an ASIA Fellows Award to carry out a comparative study of Vietnamese traditional performance and Cantonese Opera in China. She was a Visiting Scholar at the Harvard-Yenching Institute in the academic year 2013 – 2014 and a Coordinate Research Scholar in 2015. Before starting her second research in the USA, she was a Guest Scholar at the Institute for Research in Humanities, Kyoto University in October 2014. She was awarded a scholarship from American Council for Learned Studies (The Robert H.N Ho Family Foundation Program in Buddhist Studies) for a collaborative project (2015 competition year).

She has given lectures at universities in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, and the USA on the interactive relationship between Vietnam and China from Buddhist literature, performance studies, and religious practices aspects.

Nguyễn Thị Hậu

Tiến sĩ Nguyễn Thị Hậu sinh ra tại Hà Nội và lớn lên tại An Giang. Bà tốt nghiệp Khoa Lịch sử trƣờng Đại học tổng hợp TP. HCM, chuyên ngành Khảo cổ học năm 1980 (nay là Trường ĐH KHXH&NV TP. HCM). Bà hoàn thành luận án Tiến sĩ Khảo cổ học tại Viện Khoa học xã hội TP. HCM năm 1997.

Bà là giảng viên trường đại học tổng hợp TP. HCM từ năm 1981 đến năm 1994, sau đó là phó giám đốc bảo tàng lịch sử TP. HCM (1998 – 2005), phó Viện trưởng Viện Nghiên cứu phát triển TP. HCM (2008 – 2014). Hiện nay, bà là phó Tổng thư ký Hội khoa học lịch sử VN, Tổng Thư ký hội khoa học lịch sử TP. HCM. TS. Nguyễn Thị Hậu đã xuất bản 4 sách chuyên khảo và nhiều báo cáo khoa học về khảo cổ học Nam bộ và bảo tồn di sản văn hóa.

Phạm Thái Sơn

Dr. Phạm Thái Sơn earned his Ph.D in Cities and Societies (2010) at National Institute of Applied Sciences of Lyon (INSA Lyon), France. After three years of working in international firms providing consulting services in real estate and engineering industries like Savills and Egis, he joined Vietnamese-German University in 2014 as Senior Lecturer in Urban Economics cum Academic Coordinator of Sustainable Urban Development master study program, a program established in close partnership with Technical University of Darmstatd.

His research interests lie on Urban Economics, Urban Planning, Urban Morphology, Livable City, Transit-Oriented Development, Real Estate Market, Housing and Public Space. He was the Team Leader for the Consulting Project of Real Estate Market Development Plan of Ho Chi Minh City for 2016-2025 period with a vision towards 2030 (project funded by People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City) and currently acts as the Principal Investigator for two research projects on Livable City in Bình Dương province (funded by the Department of Science and Technologies) and Urban Density in Ho Chi Minh City (funded by a grant from the World Bank for VGU lecturers). Since July 2017, as the local principal investigator, he has been coordinating the Southeast Asia Neighborhoods Network (SEANNET) project in Vietnam. He is also an urban development consultant for World Bank and UNDP in Vietnam. He speaks English and French fluently.

Phạm Thị Ly

Dr. Phạm Thị Ly is known as an independent expert in higher education studies, who has experiences in both public and private sectors in tertiary education. She was a Fulbright scholar in Pratt Institute, New York, USA in 2008 and has been invited to speak at several national and international conferences. Dr Ly Phạm’s fields of expertise are educational policies, university governance and international education. She serves as editor for three monthly publications on international education in Vietnam, as well as a reviewer for Studies in Higher Education (Australia). She is currently Dean of Research Programs at the International Education Institute, a self-financed organization affiliated to Vietnam National University HCMC and Director of the Center for Higher Education Evaluation and Research at Nguyen Tat Thanh University (www.cheer.edu.vn/en). She has been recently appointed Member of the National Committee for Education and Human Resource Development by the Primary Minister of Vietnam. Tiến sĩ Phạm Thị Ly được biết tới như một người nghiên cứu độc lập về giáo dục ĐH, một người có kinh nghiệm trong cả khu vực công và khu vực tư của giáo dục đại học ở Việt Nam. Bà từng là Học giả Fulbright năm 2008 ở Trường Đại học Pratt, New York, Hoa Kỳ, và tham gia nhiều hội thảo trong nước cũng như ngoài nước với tư cách diễn giả. Lĩnh vực quan tâm của bà là chính sách giáo dục, quản trị đại học và giáo dục quốc tế. Bà làm biên tập cho ba bản tin về giáo dục quốc tế ở Việt Nam, đồng thời là người bình duyệt cho Tập san Studies in Higher Education và tập san The Asia-Pacific Educational Researcher. Hiện nay bà là Giám đốc Chương trình Nghiên cứu của Viện Đào tạo Quốc tế, ĐH Quốc gia TPHCM và Giám đốc Trung tâm Nghiên cứu và Đánh giá Giáo dục ĐH, Trường ĐH Nguyễn Tất Thành, Việt Nam. Bà vừa được Thủ tướng bổ nhiệm Ủy viên Hội đồng Giáo dục Quốc gia và Phát triển Nguồn Nhân lực nhiệm kỳ 2016-2021. Hầu hết các bài viết của bà có trên trang web cá nhân www.lypham.net.

Châu Dương Quang

Châu Dương Quang is a doctoral student in the Department of Educational Policy & Leadership, SUNY at Albany, concurrently a research assistant at The Program for Research on Private Higher Education (PROPHE). He holds a master degree in Higher & Professional Education from the UCL Institute of Education, UK. His main research interest is higher education, especially private higher education, including the traditional non-profit sector, the growing for-profit sector and even corporate universities. A newcomer to academic study, Quang has been involved in various youth development initiatives and volunteer undertakings. Indirectly these activities have stimulated his interest in higher education in Vietnam.

Dat Bao

Dr. Dat Bao is a pedagogist, visual artist and song composer. He provides visual illustrations for textbooks and writes music as a hobby when life inspires. Dat lectures at Monash University and conducts research into creative pedagogy with implications in curriculum design. His recent book Understanding Silence and Reticence (Bloomsbury, 2014) reflects his view on how silence can sometimes become the most meaningful sound in the mind.

Ngô Tự Lập

Dr. Ngô Tự Lập was born in Hanoi in 1962. He earned his first University Degree, in Navigation, in the USSR (1986), and then served in Vietnam Navy as captain of a landing ship. In 1990, he entered the Hanoi Law College, from which he graduated in 1993. After a short time working in the Military Supreme Tribunal, he became a literary editor of the Army Publishing House, then the Hanoi Publishing House, and has worked for several newspapers. In 1996, he earned his Master Degree in Literature in Paris. From 2000 to 2003, he was director of the Inco Development Research Institute (IDRI) in Hanoi. Ngô Tự Lập got his PhD at the Illinois State University in 2006 and began to work at the International School – Vietnam National University as lecturer then Dean of the Department of Social Sciences, Humanities and Economics. A member of the Vietnam Writers’ Union and Hanoi Writers’ Association, he is also a song writer, a translator of Russian, English, French, and the first director of the Phan Châu Trinh Culture Foundation. Currently, he is Director of the International Francophone Institute (Hà Nội).

Ngô Tự Lập has published about 30 books (fictions, poems, essays, and translations from Russian, French and English). He won seven prizes for his writings. Some of his works were translated into English, French, German, Swedish, Italian, Czech, and Thai.

Trần Kiên

Dr. Trần Kiên is a lecturer in laws at the School of Law, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. He earned both his PhD and Master degree at the University of Glasgow, Britain in 2015 and 2010 respectively. Prior to his postgraduate studies overseas, he had completed his first law degree at Vietnam National University, Hanoi (2007).

At the School of Law, his teaching is primarily focused on private law including but not limited to Roman law, Civil law, and Intellectual property law at both undergraduate and postgraduate programs. However, Kien’s research is more diverse and interdisciplinary. His research on child support, family and marriage law, immigrant workers, human rights and constitution has been published on a number of domestic as well as international journals and books. At this moment, his research interests lie in the reform and development of law of Vietnam in the context of transition, post-socialist. He is also interested in understanding how other fields of social science such as history, art, economics can inform or influence our perception about law.

Vũ Thành Tự Anh

Dr. Vũ Thành Tự Anh is the Dean the Fulbright School of Public Policy and Management (Fulbright University Vietnam) in Ho Chi Minh City, and a senior research fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School. Dr. Vũ Thành’s primary research interests include political economy, public finance, economic development, and industrial policy. He has been leading Fulbright School’s policy research and analysis efforts. He teaches regularly in the Fulbright School’s executive education and policy dialogue initiatives with the Vietnamese government.

Dr. Vũ Thành has served as a member of The Consultative Group of the Vietnamese National Assembly‘s Committee of Economic Affairs. He has also been a member of the Board of Experts of The National Financial Supervisory Commission of Vietnam. He frequently comments on economic policy issues in the Vietnamese media. He is currently an op-ed columnist for the Saigon Economic Times, a leading economic and business journal in Vietnam. Dr. Vũ Thành received his MA and PhD degrees in economics from Boston College.

Emmanuelle Peyvel

Dr. Emmanuelle Peyvel is an Associate Professor in Geography at the University of Brest. Since 2005, her research has dealt with the development of tourism and leisure in Việt Nam. Between 2005 and 2007, she obtained a Lavoisier scholarship from the French Ministry for Foreign Affairs that allowed her to live for 2 years in Hà Nội. In 2008, she completed her Vietnamese training at the INALCO (National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilisations, Paris). In 2009, she defended a PhD thesis on domestic tourism in Việt Nam. Today, she’s focused on the role of recreative mobilities in the construction and the globalization of Vietnamese cities. As a member of the Institute of East Asian Studies (Lyon), she’s part of the Virtual Saigon research program. She teaches Tourism Studies in France and Việt Nam as a member of the AUF network.

Trịnh Lê Anh

Trịnh Lê Anh, Department of Events Management, Faculty of Tourism Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University Hanoi, is also an inspiring lecturer and a well-known TV show host, MC, and event conductor. Le Anh has been engaged in different forms of the arts and performances alongside his interests and expertise in tourism and development studies, and the social and cultural issues surrounding festivals and events in Vietnam. In his capacity as MC Le Anh in numerous major events, he has had a strong public influence in the Vietnamese society.

Nguyễn Hữu Sử

Nguyễn Hữu Sử là nhà nghiên cứu Phật giáo, hiện công tác tại Viện nghiên cứu Tôn giáo, Viện Hàn lâm Khoa học Xã hội Việt Nam. Nguyễn Hữu Sử tốt nghiệp cử nhân Hán ngữ văn tại Đại học Sư phạm Phúc Kiến năm 2012. Trương Minh Huy Vũ

Nguyen Hoang Tuan

Dr. Nguyen Hoang Tuan is a senior lecturer at Thủ Dầu Một University (Bình Dương province) and visiting lecturer at the USSH and Open University (M.A. TESOL programs). He has been teaching a variety of courses including Discourse Analysis, Sociolinguistics and Language Teaching, Language Teaching Practice, SLA, and English Literature. His research interests are Linguistic Approaches to Literature, Discourse Analysis, Multimodality, and Service Learning. Dr. Nguyen Hoang Tuan is also a TOEIC master trainer (ETS, IIG Vietnam). He is the current Dean of Foreign Language Faculty.

Vũ Tú Thành

Vũ Tú Thành is Deputy Regional Managing Director and Vietnam Representative for the US-ASEAN Business Council. He joined the Council as its first Vietnam Representative in late 2007 when the Council opened its Hanoi office. In this capacity, he has been advising the world’s leading multinational companies on business strategies in Vietnam and helping them engage directly with key decision makers in both the government and private sectors here.

Prior to this, Thanh had worked in various capacities in Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs including Information and Outreach Manager for APEC 2006 Vietnam, as a member of the National APEC Organizing Committee, and Research Fellow and Teaching Staff at the Institute for International Relations (now Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam) in Hanoi.

Thanh has over 15 years of experience as a business and political consultant in Vietnam, covering a wide range of issue areas including business, politics, the media, education, NGOs and social development. Thanh holds a master’s degree from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs of Syracuse University where he studied international relations and public policies on a Fulbright scholarship in 2003 – 2005.

Hoàng Anh Tuấn

Dr. Hoàng Anh Tuấn is an associate professor of history, chair of urban history, and vice rector (academic, graduate, intl. programs) at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi). He received his Bachelor (1999) and Master (2001) from VNU-Hanoi, Advanced Master (2002) and Doctorate (2006) from Leiden University (Nederland). He is the author of Silk for Silver: Dutch-Vietnamese Relations, 1637-1700 (Brill, 2007) and World Trade and Vietnamese Integration, Sixteenth to Eighteenth Centuries (VNU Press, 2016), Early Modern Southeast Asia, 1350-1800 (Routledge, 2016, co-editor). His major research interests include early-modern Asian-European interactions; global history, urban history.

Jonathan Warren

Dr. Jonathan Warren is a Full Professor of International Studies and Co-Director of the Center for Brazilian Studies, University of Washington, Seattle. He has published extensively in the areas of critical race studies, development, art, and education. Some of his recent work includes “The Diversification of State Power: Vietnam’s Alternative Path to Budgetary Transparency, Accountability and Participation” (in Open Budgets, 2013), “After Colorblindness: Teaching Antiracism to Progressive Whites in the US” (in Teaching Race and Anti-Racism in Contemporary America, 2014), From the Bottom Up (Third World Newsreel, 2015, 61 minutes), and Cultures of Development: Vietnam, Brazil and the Unsung Vanguard of Modernity (Routledge, in press).

Rommel A. Curaming

Dr. Rommel A. Curaming is Assistant Professor in History and Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Brunei Darussalam (UBD). He is the Programme Leader of the History, Social Science and International Studies Programme, as well as Coordinator of Southeast Asian Studies Programme at UBD. He completed a PhD at the Australian National University (ANU) with a thesis that compares the state-historian relations in Indonesia and the Philippines during the Suharto and Marcos periods. Prior to joining UBD in late 2010, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and La Trobe University under the Endeavour Australia Award. His research interests include history and memory of political violence, the politics of writing and public consumption of history, comparative historiography, heritage-making, place-making, and knowledge politics and state-intellectual relations in Islands Southeast Asia. He has published articles and reviews in international refereed journals such as Critical Asian Studies, South East Asia Research, Time and Society, Sojourn, Philippine Studies, and Journal of Southeast Asian Studies, among others.

Triệu Minh Hải

Triệu Minh Hải, born in 1982 in Hanoi, is an independent artist.

Triệu Minh Hải demonstrates his own observation and understanding of the dynamic combination between a mathematical as well as natural phenomenon and art with a series of fractal-inspired pencil drawings. Each series consists of 10 works, which are laid out in a continuous, horizontal order adjoining each other. Using the most primary form of artistic expression, he works with the best aspects of pencil drawing; that is to form delicate layers of shades and patterns, and consequentially to intensify the aesthetic quality of his artworks. Through the mechanism of fractal with physical practice, Triệu Minh Hải delivers a liberal criticism, at the same time searching for the relation between theory and natural operation.

Nguyễn Như Huy

Nguyễn Như Huy, born in 1971, is visual artist, independent curator, art critic and poet. His art practices are concerned to the relationship between present and past and the intervention of different temporal-spatial dimensions. His works have been shown internationally in Japan, France, and USA. Như Huy has been writing, translating and publishing domestically and internationally on Vietnam contemporary art, culture, and art theory, and has been being guest speaker for the numerous international conferences such as Vietnam Art Post-Doi Moi,” which was held at Singapore Art Museum 2008, Asian Curator Conference organized by the Japan Foundation 2010, Alternative Route: Art & Cultural Exchange In Asia in Yokohama, Koganecho Bazaar Project 2014, etc.

Huy is co-editor and one of the authors for the first and only anthology of Vietnamese modern and contemporary art, the bilingual Essays on Modern and Contemporary Vietnamese Art, which was published by Singapore Art Museum in 2009; Huy is a writer for the Vietnam session in the anthology, Video Art, an Art, a History, published by Singapore Art Museum in 2010 to accompany the exhibition of a collection of video works from 1965-2010 by the Pompidou Centre and Singapore Art Museum. Huy was also an official researcher on the new media art in Myanmar and Vietnam in a research project on new media art in ASEAN that was organized and conducted by the ASEAN ministry of culture in 2011-2012. In 2015, a series of Như Huy’s poems was selected and published in Stand Magazine, England. Như Huy was co-curator for the Singapore Biennale 2013 and since 2013 Huy has been serving as a curatorially advisor foe r thlong- term project, Koganecho Bazaar, Yokohama, Japan. Như Huy is a guest curator for Brand New Project 2015, an annual project initiated by Bangkok Creative University that aims to introduce potential young Thai artists to Thailand’s contemporary art scene. In 2016 Huy was a co-curator of Kuandu Biennale 2016 and currently is artistic director of the one-year Asian multiple activities and interdisciplinary festival Asian In/Visible Station 2016-2017 that is organized and curated by ZeroStation in Ho Chi Minh city and funded by the Asian Center, Japan Foundation.

Nguyễn Quốc Dũng

Nguyễn Quốc Dũng tốt nghiệp chuyên ngành Thiết kế đồ họa tại trường ĐH Tôn Đức Thắng năm 2008 và tốt nghiệp chuyên ngành Hội Họa khoa sơn dầu tại ĐH Mỹ Thuật Tp. HCM năm 2014.

Dũng hiện đang sống và làm việc tại Tp. Hồ Chí Minh và đã tham gia dự án “Những câu chuyện Sài Gòn,” tại Indonesia, của Ga 0, giám tuyển, được tài trợ bởi quỹ Nhật Bản năm 2017; chương trình lưu trú nghệ sĩ tại Sàn Art Laboratory phiên thứ 8, năm 2016. Ngoài ra, Dũng còn có các triển lãm Khu vực VI tại Bảo tàng Mỹ thuật Tp. HCM năm 2014, Việt Nam, tác phẩm triển lãm, Gái điếm; tham gia triển lãm mỹ thuật trẻ 2013 tại Applied Arts, Đại học Mỹ thuật Tp. HCM. Việt Nam, tác phẩm triển lãm, Tuổi teen.

Phan Quang

Born in Binh Dinh, Vietnam in 1976. Phan Quang’s practice is based on the contemporary photography concept and the political and cultural experiments of himself to turn it into his artworks.

Before beginning to exhibit his artwork, Phan worked for over a decade as a photojournalist for some of Asia’s best-known media, including Forbes, the New York Times and Viet Nam Economic Times. Currently he is a photography lecturer at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City.

Prihatmoko Moki

Prihatmoko Moki, born in 1982, currently works and lives in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. He obtained his BFA from Indonesian Institute of Fine-Art, majoring Printmaking Department in 2009. He has been working with several mediums of painting, drawing, comic, mural and music. But his focus is in printmaking/silkscreen technique to propose about the idea of spreading out the artworks and the challenge of multiple copies and the notion of originality and copy, because the ability of printmaking to produce works in edition. In his recent works, he interested with historical view, which in between fiction and reality. Departed from these he uses historical myth as a tool to discuss and understand about social contemporary situation. In his project he prefers to approach the issue in satire, controversial and dark humor ways.

His solo exhibition including Melancholic Ego in the Colorful Song of Agony, Jakarta (2010) Power of the Sun, Yogyakarta (2012) Art project KW 2 Yogyakarta (2011). Forget Me Not Yogyakarta (2015), and Prajurit Kalah Tanpa Raja, Yogyakarta (2016).

In 2013 together with Malcolm Smith (AU) and Rudi Hermawan he founded Krack! Studio based in Yogyakarta, the studio and gallery focusing printmaking.

In the same year he have been organizing and curating LELAGU, annual art event which combining acoustic music and responded with live drawing in KedaiKebun Gallery, Yogyakarta. Since 2006, he joined multidiscipline art project PUNKASILA, initiated by DaniusKesminas (AU) and had several shows in Indonesia, Australian and Cuba. He is also selected by Megalo Print studio/ Canberra, Australia for residency program in 2014, and selected to be nominators in young artist award Redbase Foundation, Yogyakarta in 2016.

JC Smith

JC Smith is the founder of a media production company in Hanoi called We Create Content. He is currently creating short videos about hotels in Vietnam for Traveloka, an online ticket booking and hotel reservation service based in Indonesia that is aggressively seeking to change the face of tourism in Southeast Asia today by, among other things, creatively targeting the many young, digital media-savvy travelers in Southeast Asia whom we can think of as members of an “Instagram” or “hipster” generation. One of the ways that Traveloka is doing this is through the production of digital media that will attract members of this demographic to various tourist sites in the region.
